Madrid – Valladolid line
Segovia station
The Segovia station is a newly-conceived construction and has no connection to the present Iberian-gauge network. It is located within the municipal area of Segovia, near the city’s SG-20 highway and the AP-61 motorway, which guarantees optimum access conditions.
Both the design of the terminal and the global development of the project were governed by exacting criteria as regards facilitating the access of all travelers, a philosophy that can be seen throughout all of Adif’s actions relating to new construction projects or modernization of existing infrastructures.
It has an approximate floor area of 5,100 m2. The building is located at a higher elevation than the tracks, taking advantage of the topography, and access to the platforms is by means of mechanical lifts.
Features
The spacious, triple-height area devoted to the hall is laid out like the nucleus of the new station. All of the other spaces are arranged around it, such as the travel center for ticket sales and client services, the waiting room, the different business premises, the cafeteria with a view over the tracks, toilets, offices and other spaces for the use of various installations. All of this is located around the perimeter in order not to interfere with the flow of passengers.
The car park is on the ground level and will have approximately 220 spaces, along with areas for buses and taxis.
Space around the station has been reserved to facilitate the construction of hotels and offices, should it be necessary.
Design
As regards the design, the treatment of light stands out. Skylights were created in the ceiling that filter and homogenize natural light in the interior.
There are also four large wells of light, one in each of the corners, which collect natural light through their upper part and let it pass through into the building thanks to the use of alabaster, the only translucent stone. With this system the inside temperature is kept homogenous because direct sunlight is avoided.
With respect to the materials, the use of limestone on the façade stands out and is combined with glass and metallic panels. The latter are set back, filtering and directing light into the interior of the station.
Once inside, stone and glass are again predominant and on the ground floor they are combined with wood to create a more ordered and agreeable atmosphere in the public areas.
Railway infrastructure
With respect to the railway infrastructure, the new station will have six UIC (international) gauge tracks, four of which will be for train parking.
The two through tracks for the passage of trains at speeds of up to 350 km/h embrace the other four which are destined for train parking; these latter will be serviced by two 400-meter-long, 8.3-meter-wide roofed platforms.
About two kilometers from the mouth of the Guadarrama tunnels, it is necessary to reserve an area between the two points for train evacuation in case of emergency.
In this regard, the Segovia station also houses a technical building where the Guadarrama tunnel monitoring equipment will be located, among other installations.
